Returning to Danville for its 31st year, the 5K/10K Devil Mountain Run remains a
tradition for Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland. Approximately 4,000
participants, including top competitive runners, walking enthusiasts, families,
and local businesses strut their stuff for fun and prizes. As the oldest
continuous running event in the East Bay, it offers two flat and fast courses,
5K and 10K, that take advantage of Danville's beauty along a portion of the Iron
Horse Trail. Proceeds from the race help offset nearly $9 million in charity
care provided by Children's Hospital Oakland every year, as well as numerous
programs such as the fully accredited on-site K-12 school, the Bay Area's only
specialized child abuse evaluation center, and an on-site helicopter landing pad
which enables trauma and inter-facility patients to be in the care of pediatric
experts within minutes. As the oldest, busiest and most comprehensive pediatric
medical center between Los Angeles and Seattle, Children's Hospital & Research
Center at Oakland has more than 175,000 patient visits per year. As the
state-designated pediatric emergency department and trauma center, the hospital
helps save the lives of critically ill and injured children every year. The
Children's Hospital Research Institute is making significant progress in
diagnosing and treating pediatric cancers, AIDS/HIV, hemophilia, and cystic
fibrosis.
