NAIW 62nd Annual Convention - Celebrating NAIW HarmonyCyber Crime: Superstition or FactNAIW National President Linda Santiso shared "Dreams of the Future" during her administrative report to the members and industry today at the 62nd Annual Convention. President Santiso shared the following Dreams of the Future: Expansion of our NAIW Web Site: so members now have the ability to update their membership information on line. Members are now enrolling in the NAIW University and taking course exams on line. We now average 300,000 to 400,000 hits per month on our web site. This has resulted in a significant increase in our non-dues revenue for the association. Technology utilized to Increased Communication to our Members: Broadcast emails and our electronic newsletter Inroads continue to drive this communication process. And this year for the first time, members will receive electronic confirmations as they renew their membership. This will save time and money in processing member dues. Focus on Leadership Training: We once again conducted a successful state director training session. We included professional development training for your Board of Directors in such areas as communication skills and conflict resolution. And, we launched the new "NAIW R&R—Recruiting to Retain" to help direct the efforts of leaders within a local association. Increased Membership Involvement. The Horizon advisory panels were created so that members could have input in establishing the strategies, action plans and priorities for the future growth of this association. Over 200 Members hold the New DAE Designation: Diversified Advanced Education (DAE) designation and new designees will receive their DAE certificate during the awards luncheon. Continued Commitment to the NAIW Industry Focus of Cyber Crime. Today, on Friday the 13th, the focus of our convention will be on Cyber Crime Superstition or Fact. Two New Education Programs: Our new six-hour course on Cyber Crime will be a first of its kind focusing on the exposures not addressed in standard coverage forms and again emphasizes NAIW’s commitment to bringing you the latest information available on our industry focus. And our new two-hour program on Professional Liability will include the latest information on Intellectual Property. NAIW’s Career Corner: The Career Corner is a new feature on NAIW’s web site and included in issues of NAIW Now! to assist members in the three areas that the majority of our members listed as typical every day challenges in the workplace – organization, technology, and time management. President Santiso led the Cyber Crime Panel discussion with industry leaders during the second business meeting at the 62nd annual convention. She shared that the growth of the information age and the globalization of Internet communication and commerce have impacted significantly upon the manner in which economic crimes are committed, the frequency with which those crimes are committed, and the difficulty in apprehending the perpetrators. One recent study revealed that the amount of credit card fraud is twelve times higher online than in the physical retail world. Yet another recent study found that the number of search warrants issued by the federal government for online data has increased 800% over the past few years. Technology has contributed to that increase in four major respects - anonymity, security (or insecurity), privacy (or lack of it) and globalization. Additionally, technology has provided the medium or opportunity for the commission of traditional crimes. Criminals continue to make false statements in credit applications submitted over the Internet, bank employees continue to embezzle funds by wire transfer or account takeover, and swindlers continue to misrepresent products at auction sites over the Internet. However, it is the widespread use of technology and the Internet for business transactions and communications, and the confluence of anonymity, security, privacy and globalization that have exposed the public and private sectors to an alarming new array of cyber attacks. Industry leaders discussed the effects of the cyber crime attacks on the industry and how to minimize these attacks in the future. NAIW has addressed this issue on a special section of our web site by posting the latest information from the government, software companies, insurance companies, and the media. NAIW will continue to promote its efforts to fight Cyber Crime in its publication, Today’s Insurance Professionals. President Santiso continues, "The White House unveiled its National Plan to Secure Cyberspace in fall of 2002. The plan is an initiative urging insurers and companies to assess and manage exposures to cyber risk. Among other things, the plan calls for developing new best practices and standards for this area, as well as for carriers to provide stand-alone cyber risk policies and loss assessment services for corporate clients." NAIW Announces 2003-2004 National Officers - Results of the election for national officers were announced today.
